I have worked in the maintenance and engineering field for the past 35 years. I have seen a wide range of operating environments and they all had unique operational requirements. Most recently I retired from a major auto manufacturer after 26 years of service. During my time I have seen the good, and the not so good when it comes to workforce development. I was also around long enough to watch problems that were cyclical in nature become new experiences for our newer associates, and cost a tremendous amount of downtime in the process. Most of the training we received was OJT, which is extremely important and beneficial, as long as the person doing the training has a clear learning objectives, and places first things first. Typically the mentor will review something with the new technician when it arises. Now this is important, but the student may have no fundamental understanding of what they are talking about.
There is a proven systematic approach to training and onboarding associates. In my opinion, you owe it to the associate so they have a clear path for success. If a well thought out training plan is established with measurable’s, and the students follow this path, then success is likely. Now some may not be cut out for this field, and better off suited for a different role, then you have the metrics to support this decision.
